Falmouth/Upper Cape BPW Bulletin
August/September 2008

President's Letter

As we are embarking on a very new adventure which involves the consolidating of two active BPW organizations I wish to express my gratitude and thanks to all who have stepped up to the plate and accepted positions both on the Board and various committees.  As of this date I have contacted some members and will continue to seek out members who are willing to ensure a very successful 2008-2009 year as we meet our many challenges.

Your 2008-2009 Board has held three meetings and it was the consensus of the majority of members that our monthly dinner meetings would continue to be held at the Coonamessett Inn at a cost of twenty two dollars all inclusive.  Monthly Board meetings are to be held the fourth Wednesday of the month and monthly Dinner meetings are to be held on the third Wednesday of the month.  Installation of Officers will be held at our September 17th dinner meeting.  Our October Dinner Meeting is to be held at the Hyannis Golf Club in conjunction with Cranberry District and the Women of Achievement recipients are to be presented and honored at this time.  Please save the October 22, 2008 date for this monthly meeting.

This year your board has also agreed that all Bulletins are to be sent via email and to those members who do not have email a hard copy of the same is to be mailed.

As we look forward to a very exciting and energetic 2008-2009 year please take a minute to remember why we are all members of this organization and to put our best foot forward in order to have an exciting and productive year ahead.

Priscilla Young Running for Barnstable County Register of Probate

With the consolidation of the Falmouth BPW and the Upper Cape of Sandwich BPW chapters, we now have a membership of approximately 30 members.  Included in this group of talented women,  is a candidate for public office.  Priscilla Young is a candidate for Register of Probate for Barnstable County.  Priscilla has been a member of the Upper Cape of Sandwich BPW chapter for the past three years. For the last two years she had been our  Treasurer and was named our Member of the Year.

The home page of her campaign web site describes her this way:

Priscilla has over twenty-seven years experience with the Barnstable Probate and Family Court. That includes experience in all areas of the court's jurisdiction and experience in the administrative operation of the court.  In June of 1994, she was promoted to Assistant Register of Probate by the First Justice, with the recommendation of the Associate Justice.  The Probate and Family Court has jurisdiction over family matters such as divorce, paternity, child support, custody, visitation, adoption, termination of parental rights, and abuse prevention. Probate matters include jurisdiction over wills, administrations, guardianships, conservatorships and change of name. The Court also has general equity jurisdiction.

She is the ONLY candidate experienced in all aspects of the jurisdiction and operation of the Registry, including the administrative side, having served as the budget, payroll and personnel coordinator and the supervisor of the Probate Department. She knows the laws and procedures of the Probate Court, provides legal expertise to the Judges and answers questions for litigants and attorneys. Priscilla is the person that staff members come to for answers and assistance with convoluted and difficult probate cases.

Many of you may not aware that Barnstable Probate Court currently holds well over a million dollars in custodial accounts for unknown heirs or beneficiaries with unknown addresses. The web site will provide a list of those accounts. Priscilla will also look into a way to include them in the State Treasurer's periodic publication. This will help return the funds to the rightful owners.

You also may not be aware that in July of 2000 the legislature created a political patronage position exclusively for the Barnstable Probate and Family Court. Any person thus appointed serves at the pleasure of the Register. The next Register of Probate will be the appointing authority for that patronage position. It is a disgrace to waste taxpayer money on that unnecessary position, especially when budget restraints prevent filling vacant entry level positions.

Priscilla will NOT fill the political patronage position. A vote for Priscilla is your best opportunity to support an experienced and eminently qualified candidate for Register of Probate and at the same time take a stand against political patronage. A vote for Priscilla is a vote for the most qualified and most experienced candidate.

Priscilla has to win the Republican primary on September 16 in order to appear on the ballot for the general election on November 4.  While she is running as a Republican, her web site indicates this is not a partisan position and that the Register of Probate serves all the residents of Barnstable County regardless of party affiliation.

If you would like to help Priscilla with her campaign please visit her web site at www.electpriscillayoung.com and volunteer.  It would be great to have an elected official from our membership!
