Falmouth/Upper Cape BPW Bulletin
November 2008

President's Letter

This will be the last Newsletter that you will receive until January, 2009. An invitation will be either mailed or emailed to all members in regards to the December 10th Holiday Social which is to be held at the Coonamessett Inn. Your Board, along with Jennifer Perrault-Minshall and Helene DeFoe will be planning a special evening , please mark your calendars and plan on bringing a guest for a social evening and a chance to enjoy the festivities.

Our October meeting which was held in conjunction with Cranberry District while honoring the Falmouth Woman of Achievement, Paula Peters was well attended. In attendance were one hundred and twenty five members and guests. The Falmouth/Upper Cape local was represented by seventeen of our members. The program which honored Upper Cape, Mid Cape and Lower Cape Women of Achievement was exceptional. The speaker for the evening was Joan Anderson, a very well known author of several books. Joan’s positive and upbeat message also added in creating a very enjoyable evening.

The paperwork in regards to the merger of both Upper Cape and Falmouth locals has been submitted to National with our request that they complete the transfer requests and upon doing so, that National then change the name on the Falmouth Charter to Upper Cape Cod Business and Professional Women. National has received this request and is at this time in the process of following through as stated.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or ideas in order that all members may have a say and express their wishes for this 2008-2009 year. btmff@aol.com.

Wanted: Young Careerist Candidates
(and Committee Members)!

The Virginia Allan Young Careerist (YC) Program is a signature event of BPW/USA. It provides an opportunity for young women to have fun, network, practice speech presentation skills, and participate in a meaningful professional development process. At the February 18th dinner meeting, we will be honoring the Young Careerist for Falmouth/Upper Cape BPW.

Jane Sheridan has volunteered to chair this committee. But, she needs at least 2 members to participate on the committee. Materials are available from BPW/USA, so there is no need to re-invent the wheel. However, we do have to determine how we want to structure the YC program for our local organization. So, if you are willing to participate on the committee, please email Jane as soon as possible at jes02655@verizon.net or you may call her at 508-420-2985.

We also need to identify young women who would like to take part in this outstanding development opportunity. Any young woman who is between the ages of 21 and 35, inclusive, by July 31st, 2009 is eligible to take part in this program. This is a great opportunity to introduce non-members to BPW and its legislative platform.

In addition, a candidate at the club level must have at least one year of full-time work experience. To move on to District and State competition, the YC must be a BPW member in good standing and sign the BPW/USA Legislative Platform agreement.

So, while we can't tell you exactly how the YC program will be structured this year, we ask you to please reach out to your contacts and identify young women who would benefit from this opportunity to develop their presentation skills. Please give their contact information to Jane as soon as possible. There will be further information on the program in the December newsletter.

If you are unable to attend the November meeting or the December Holiday Social, please have a

Happy Thanksgiving and a wonderful Holiday Season-—Happy 2009!!

December Holiday Social Meeting

This year's December meeting will include a charity aspect, entertainment and a Yankee swap. We have chosen The Salvation Army's Dress A Live Doll as this year's charity. I have heard Major Hansen, the Director of the Salvation Army talk about the great need for sponsors. Last year, they had 1,000 requests for children needing winter clothing. This year, they've already received 1,400 requests for matches.

The Club will adopt a child as part of the Salvation Army's Dress A Live Doll program. The Salvation Army matches us with a child aged of newborn to 12 year old. The adoption begins when we receive a name tag with the child's first name, age and clothing sizes. As a sponsor, we are asked to provide new clothing including underwear, socks, pants, shirt/blouse, sweater, winter jacket, hat and gloves.

We are asking members to make a monetary donation at the November BPW meeting. The suggested donation is $10.00 per member. We will know the child's first name, ages and clothing sizes. Helene DeFoe will shop for the clothing, wrap it and bring it to the Salvation Army in Hyannis. She will deliver the

gifts to the Salvation Army in Hyannis the week after Thanksgiving.

The Salvation Army also has a second program for older children age 13 to 17 called Teens Love Christmas. Oftentimes, the teen is a sibling of the younger child in the Dress A Live Doll program. The Salvation Army suggests purchasing gift cards for a teen from places like Walmart, Kmart, Dunkin Donuts, The Gap, or the movies at the mall, etc. The teen can use the gift cards to purchase items he/she needs. The Salvation Army started this program to try to help all the children in a needy family. Teens are difficult to shop for and using the gift cards gives the teen the pleasure of making their own selections. Anything we collect beyond what we need for Dress A Live Doll will be used to purchase gift cards for the teen program.

Jennifer Perrault Minshall is planning an entertainment feature for the Holiday meeting. We will have entertainment during the Networking portion of the meeting. Bring a gift so you can participate in the Yankee Swap. Gifts should have a $10.00 maximum value. The swap is always lots of fun so plan on taking part.

Food Panty Donations

Our November 19th meeting is being held as a pre-Thanksgiving meeting. Please keep in mind the many families who are unable to enjoy this wonderful time of the year due in part to our current economy and many other circumstances which may result in their current situation. At this time we are requesting that members bring canned goods to our November Meeting. These are to be distributed to the Falmouth Service Center which also supports the Mashpee Community. Our intent is to request this donation each month and to distribute these goods to a different food bank or service center monthly.

Suggested Items: Cranberry Sauce, Gravy, Stuffing, Canned Vegetables, Quick bread mixes.

On Sunday, November 23, from 1-4 PM; the Service Center in Falmouth will also be open for donations of frozen turkeys, whole chickens, fresh vegetables, home baked breads, and pies.

Thank You for your support.
