Upper Cape Cod BPW Bulletin
April 2009

President's Letter

As Spring has arrived and as a signal of growth, flowers peak through and all starts to look bright and cheerful again here on the Cape, let’s all renew our interest in BPW with a bright and sunny attitude as we look forward to the future.

In the months ahead many changes are to be made on our State and Local levels, please voice your opinion as to the direction that you wish to take in regards to these changes and contact your local and state officers with your concerns.

The Cranberry District Annual Meeting was held on March 29, 2009 at the Hyannis Golf Club, a full report is enclosed.

April 29, 2009 is Equal Pay Day. In 2007 women earned 77.8 cents for every dollar that a man earned, this amount signifies that what a man earned as of December 31, 2008 it takes a woman until April 28, 2009 to earn the same amount. As women we continue to fight for equality both in the workplace and also in many different situations in life. Let us not forget this is a constant struggle and we certainly have not reached our goal yet. It is necessary that as women we continue to support each other at all times.

I wish to thank the membership for honoring me as your Member of The Year; I do accept this graciously however this also belongs to those who have so ably supported me during this past year which is quickly drawing to a close.

Our April 15th Dinner and Annual Meeting promises to be a busy evening for all. New Bylaws are to be voted on as well as our 2009-2010 slate of officers for the 2009-2010 year. Your Silent Auction committee is planning a fun and productive evening so please make an extra effort to attend and reward them for their hard work.

As this year is drawing to a close and we only have our May Installation and Scholarship Program, I wish to thank everyone who has attended a meeting, served on a committee, offered advice and truly helped to reorganize and rejuvenate two prior locals into one.

Reports were given by the three local Presidents.

The afternoon program was presented by author and owner of the BB Mariner Jean Lanahan Jean spoke in regards to the many hats that we as women wear. Jean’s book “Enchanted Whispers”was published in 2006 and is a gathering of the many wits and wisdoms from the mouths of Children and Mothers too.

President Elect V.J. Hartnett gave the MA State report and briefed all members as to the future of MA/BPW and to the ongoing issues we are dealing with. V.J. stated that the MA State Convention is to be held May 15-16, 2009 in Williamstown, MA and the Installation is to consist of a Saturday afternoon tea. There will not be an executive committee meeting following this tea.

Area Representative Laura Bauver reported as to the many changes which are taking place on a daily basis at the National level. One issue of great interest and discussion was the amount of $40.00 per member which is to be issued as a result of the additional expense which BPW Foundation will incur as a result of the additional members due to the merger. This amount would also allow the use of the BPW logo, the signature YC,ID and Women Joining Forces programs. All BPW members will have the opportunity to vote as to this merger so please make sure that your email addresses are updated, those members who do not have email access are to be mailed a ballot.

The MA/BPW Officers to be voted for at the May Convention are as follows:

Your current President Elect is V.J. Hartnett
President Elect: Patricia Stowell

Please remember to bring canned and packaged foods to each of our meetings this year. Our intent is to distribute these goods to a different food bank or service center each month.

Keep in mind the demand for food is way up due in part to the current state of our economy and the resulting circumstances families find themselves in.
