Upper Cape Cod BPW Bulletin
February 2009

President's Letter

As we are currently in the second half of our BPW year and we look forward to the exciting programs in the following months. I wish to thank both your board and members who have pitched in these past months by being present at out dinner meetings and by offering many constructive suggestions in order to secure the future of Upper Cape Cod BPW.

Our January dinner meeting was well attended as our members continue to support our local. Our speaker Susan Barry was both interesting and very informative.

On January 7, 2009 I attended the Cranberry District meeting, a full report is enclosed.

On February 28, 2009 the State Winter Board Meeting is to be held at the Freedom Hall in Cotuit, MA. I personally do not recall a State Winter Board being held on the Cape, which makes this a great opportunity for members who have been unable to attend a state meeting to join us and see the inner workings of our state offices. Hope to see you there!!!

February is heart month, and as heart disease has become the number ONE killer of women in America, let us all step up to the plate and speak to at least one friend, relative, or co-worker about heart disease and the important role that we must take in fighting this upward trend. February 6th is National Wear Red Day but that should not stop us from wearing red every day in February in order to bring awareness of this disease to the forefront.

Our February dinner program is to be our Young Careerist and as we support the many young women currently in our workforce, let us continue to always stand up and fight for equity for all women.

Cranberry District Meeting Report

Your President attended the Cranberry District meeting which was held on January 7, 2009. The Women of Achievement Program which was held in October, 2008 was discussed and a proposal was made that perhaps a similar program could be instituted in regards to the Young Careerist candidates. This program would be in recognition of young women and their contributions to the workplace.

District Annual Meeting is to be held on March 29, 2009 and District Director Amy Kates has been in contact with the Hyannis Golf Club in regards to this event which currently is being planned as a luncheon with an afternoon business meeting and program. The following local responsibilities are:

  • Upper Cape Cod - Program
  • Mid Cape - Registration
  • Lower Cape - Elections
Local Presidents reports were given.

The next Cranberry District Meeting is to be held on March 4, 2009 at Unos Restaurant in Hyannis, MA.

The Young Careerist Program - Leadership Development at Any Age

This year, Upper Cape Cod BPW plans to shake up our annual Young Careerist Program which will be held at our February 18th Dinner Meeting. Before the meeting, our 3 judges (Donna Maiuri, Priscilla Gerraghty and Jen Kano) will meet with and interview our participants. Following dinner, we will have our traditional YC Speak-off in which our participant(s) will speak for 3 minutes on one of the following subjects:

  • How I Achieve Work/Life Balance
  • What Leadership Means to Me
  • How Participating in the YC Program Will Help Me Achieve My Goals

Traditionally, the YC Program has focused on providing a leadership development opportunity for our younger members, ages 21-35. This year, your YC Committee (Jane Sheridan, Donna Maiuri and Amy Kates) has

decided to incorporate leadership development throughout the program for everyone. Developing these skills shouldn't be reserved for our younger members. These skills can benefit us at any and every age!

So, we will incorporate mini-leadership exercises throughout the evening. Leadership doesn't have to be "Leadership" with a "Capital L", there are opportunities for exercising leadership skills each and every day. Sometimes, leadership with a "small l" is nothing more than taking us out of our comfort zone.

Join us for an evening of learning and fun - maybe a little bit outside of your comfort zone! Bring a friend and help her develop her leadership skills, too. Finally, help us celebrate and recognize the Upper Cape Cod Young Careerist for 2008-2009.

A Profile in Leadership - the Lilly Ledbetter Story"
(For discussion during February meeting dinner)

It seems to me that the recent passage of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which was the first major piece of legislation signed into law by President Obama, provides a great starting point for thinking about what leadership really means. Lilly was a supervisor at a Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company factory in Alabama for many years. When she was approaching retirement, someone showed her a copy of a male supervisor's pay stub. Lilly learned that her male colleagues had been paid significantly more money than she was earning--for doing the same job.

Lilly sued Goodyear for pay discrimination and a jury awarded her damages. However, the deep pockets at Goodyear appealed the case to the U.S. Supreme Court. At issue was whether the 180-day time limit for filing such a suit began with an employee's first discriminatory pay check or final discriminatory pay check. Up until this suit was taken up by the "Supremes," lower courts had always held that discrimination claims could be filed within 180 of the most recent discriminatory act. However, in a 5-4 decision, the Court ruled that a person had to file suit within 180 days of the initial discriminatory pay check. So, Lilly's verdict was overturned and she received no financial benefit to re-dress the previous inequality.

When the Fair Pay Act was taken up in the current congress, the House of Representatives attempted to pass a stronger bill that would have increased the remedies for pay discrimination. However, when the

bill went to the Senate, it rejected the House attempts to pass tougher legislation. In the end, the new Fair Pay Act named in Lilly's honor re-instates the previous status quo, allowing discrimination claims to be filed within 180 days of the final discriminatory act. The Senate attempted to achieve bi-partisan support for this effort, but only managed to persuade 5 Republican Senators--4 women and Senator Arlen Specter.

Although Lilly does not benefit personally from the new law (she cannot file for a new lawsuit and the new law is not retroactive), she was there as President Obama signed the legislation and is delighted that this law will help protect future generations from pay discrimination. Unfortunately, her husband, who passed away in December, was not there to see the culmination of her actions. To quote Gail Collins in the New York Times, "she's now part of a long line of working women who went to court and changed a little bit of the world in fights that often brought them limited personal benefit."

So, what does this profile say about leadership and leadership skills? Is Lilly a leader? Are there other leaders? Is there an "un-sung" leader or leaders in this story?

Lilly filed suit at the end of her career. Do you think she would have done the same thing, if she had the same information? Why or why not?
