Upper Cape Cod BPW Bulletin

President's Letter

A BIG THANK YOU TO OUR Holiday Social Committee for putting together a wonderful social evening which was enjoyed by all.

And a BIG THANK YOU to all our members and guests who so generously

donated food which was given to the Falmouth Service Center in November and to the Mashpee Food Bank in December. Our food donations during the month January are to be donated to the Sandwich Food Pantry.

Our members were very generous in their support of our Holiday project in conjunction with the Salvation Army’s Dress A Doll Program and a sincere Thank You is extended to all.

As we enter the year 2009 I wish to announce that our new Charter has been received from BPW National. As we now look forward to pursuing our goal of a unified and productive organization in the year ahead, let us support each other and our Board so that we may continue to grow.

Our upcoming State Winter Board is to be held on February 28, 2009, this meeting is being held on Cape Cod and having such a close location for this State meeting is a great advantage for the Cranberry District and hopefully many Upper Cape Cod BPW members will be able to attend, some as first timers and some who attend regularly. Should anyone need transportation please contact me.

I wish to end the year 2008 and begin 2009 by personally thanking each and every member of the UCCBPW for all their support and assistance during this consolidation of our two locals and to wish everyone a Most Happy and Healthy 2009.

December Meeting Report

December's meeting included a Yankee swap and a donation to the Salvation Army's Dress A Live Doll and Teens Love Christmas program. Club members donated $330.00 at the November meeting and we were matched with a seven-year-old girl. The Salvation Army provided us a nametag with the child's first name, age and clothing sizes. Once we had satisfied the program's basic requirements, the remaining funds were used for a teenaged boy and girl.

Because members were so generous, Jennifer Minshall Perault and I were able to select a jacket, hat, mittens and boots. We purchased jeans, turtleneck shirts, a sweater, underwear, socks and sneakers. I was so pleased we had enough money to purchase boots and sneakers rather than having to choose between them. Most of our shopping was done at Marshalls in Mashpee. The store manager there gave us a 10% employee discount because it was a charity project. The little girl's tag indicated she like to draw so I was able to purchase art supplies and equipment at Toys R Us.

We purchased hats and gloves for the teens at Marshalls' as well as gift cards so they could select some items they wanted. We had enough money left to get additional gift cards at Old Navy and Dunkin Donuts. It was such a nice feeling to know that we made Christmas better for three children. Jennifer and I had a great time shopping together. I brought photos of the gift items to the December meeting so everyone could see what we were able to buy.

Jennifer acted as master of ceremony for the Yankee swap. Members outdid themselves on a ten-dollar budget. The gifts were so well chosen that only a few members wanted to part with their original choice. I hope the members enjoyed the meeting as much as we enjoyed arranging it.

Pay Gap Deprives Women
of $434,000 in Lifetime Earnings

The Center for American Progress Action Fund has released a new report titled, Lifetime Losses: The Career Wage Gap. The report finds that the career pay gap -- the difference between the median wages of full-time working men and women over a 40 year period -- deprives women of an average of $434,000 over the course of their working lives. The study finds that the pay gap persists across all income and education levels and widens over time. In fact, women with the most education lose the most comparatively in earnings.

Food Panty Donations

Please remember to bring canned and packaged foods to each of our meetings this year. Our intent is to distribute these goods to a different food bank or service center each month.

Keep in mind the demand for food is way up due in part to the current state of our economy and the resulting circumstances families find themselves in.

Thank You for your support.
