President's LetterA super evening was enjoyed by all who attended the District Woman of Achievement program on October 21, 2009. Both Susan Avery and Lynn Poyant were outstanding examples of women who achieve their goals while continuing to mentor the many women who will follow in their footsteps. I wish to thank Sylvia Connor for all her time and effort in contacting and arranging times with Dr. Susan Avery, our Upper Cape Cod WOA. Our November speaker is to be Arlene Kirsch of “We Can” and I ask all members to please try to attend this interesting program. On October 31, 2009 I attended the State Fall Board and I have enclosed my full report with regards to this meeting. As we are approaching a busy time of the year for all of us, please take some time out to join us to network, dine and enjoy an informative program. My sincere best wishes to all for a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends. Betty

BPW/MA Fall BoardJeanne Alves, Amy Kates and your President attended the October 31, 2009 Fall Board which was held at the U of Mass Medical School in Worcester, MA. The meeting was opened by State President V.J. Harnett and twenty nine members were registered. The Treasurer’s report was presented by State Treasurer Caroline Coscia. At this time the meeting was adjourned and a member’s forum was held with regards to the signing of the BPW Foundation licensing agreement and the forty dollar licensing fee. All members present were asked to give their opinion as to this matter. Much discussion was held in order to reach a solution to this ongoing issue. The meeting was then reconvened and a motion was made and accepted to sign the licensing agreement for one year and to pay the amount of $6,920.00 to Foundation in March and if necessary, to use funds from the reserve fund. State Treasurer Caroline Coscia reported that to date the amount of one thousand nine hundred dollars has been sent to the State BPW towards this licensing fee from our members. A motion was also made and accepted to have an Attorney review this BPW/Foundation agreement with regards to renegotiating the agreement should BPW/MA not wish to continue a second year association with Foundation and also to review what the legal ramifications would be with regards to programs, the logo etc. should BPW/MA disassociate from BPW/Foundation. The funds to pay for an Attorney would be taken from the G.E. Interest account with the amount not to exceed $3000.00. State ID Chair Laura Bauver stated that she will be sending an email to all members to determine if there would be any interest in holding a weekend I.D. program. Please contact any members who do not receive email in order make them aware of this request. Patricia Stowell, State By-Laws Chair has requested volunteers to serve on the By-Law committee in order that changes be made and brought to the Winter Board for review. The meeting was adjourned on a positive note with an executive meeting to follow. Betty A. Moffitt, President |

Dress A Live Doll |

Once again, the club will be participating in the Salvation Army's Dress A Live Doll program. I am arranging a match with a little girl. We will buy a complete outfit for her from underwear to coat, shoes and boots. Our gifts will be brought to the Salvation Army in early December so the children's parent/s can present the gifts to her at Christmas. Last year, club members donated over $300 to this project. In addition to the little girl, we were able to purchase gift cards for a teen-age girl. This was one of the most rewarding things we did last year. Please bring a little extra cash to the November meeting with you. Betty will be collecting it for me, as I will be on vacation. I'll complete the shopping on my return. Last year, the average donation was $10.00 and a few members were able to contribute a bit more. Donate what you can, knowing you'll be making Christmas very special for a little girl. We will repeat the Yankee Swap again at the December meeting. Bring a $10.00 gift with you and be prepared to swap. Last year, everyone brought such beautiful things! As I remember, we had a few members who got so attached to their first pick, they were a little reluctant to part with them, which added the humor to the gathering. Fortunately, all the gifts were lovely and whatever gift you ended up with was nice. Helene DeFoe |
Arlene Kirsch will inform us about We Can, a non-profit corporation based in Harwich that gives Cape Cod women in any life transition such as divorce, job seeking, and education a hand but not a handout using a collaboration between private and non-profit organizations. Arlene was interviewed by Mindy Todd, on WCAI's "The Point" in September and said that the volunteers from diverse businesses who mentor the women are amazing.
