President's Letter

I sincerely wish to thank Sylvia Connor for stepping in and serving in my capacity as President during the March Dinner meeting as I was unable to attend. The comments which I have received were that your speaker for the evening was very interesting and informative and that everyone present enjoyed the evening.

It does not seem possible that twenty four months have passed since I have served as your President and that this is to be my last President’s Letter. I feel that we as UCC/BPW members have accomplished a great deal during this time. We have re organized two locals into one and have presented many excellent programs, our speakers have always been very interesting. We, as a local, continue to support our Upper Cape food pantries, the Emerson House, Carriage House, award a Scholarship, and sponsor a Live Dress a Doll in conjunction with the Salvation Army. We have welcomed new members during this time as hopefully we continue to grow. ABSOLUTELY none of this would have been accomplished with out each and every one of you and my thanks goes out to one and all.

Our April meeting is also our Annual Mmeeting when we will be electing the 2010-2011 Officers and have our Silent Auction. This is always a fun evening so come casual and enjoy!!!

Betty

Cranberry District Meeting

On March 10, 2010 I attended the Cranberry District Meeting which was held at Uno’s Restaurant in Hyannis, MA. Discussion was held as to the Cranberry District Annual Meeting and it was established that the meeting is to be held on April 11, 2010 at Alberto’s Restaurant in Hyannis, MA. The cost for this meeting is to be $30.00 and a speaker will be presented as a portion of the program for the day.

All three locals were represented and discussion was held as to ways in which we may be encouraged to grow our membership and bring awareness to the fact that women DO continue to earn less than their male counterparts in the workplace.

The nominating committee will be presenting the 2010 slate to be voted on at the Annual Meeting. Marsha Stout has volunteered to serve as acting Cranberry District Treasurer until the annual election of Officers for 2010-2011, as she is currently a signer on the accounts.

Responsibilities are as follows with regards to the April 11, 2010 Annual Meeting:
Lower Cape - Registration
Mid Cape - Program
Upper Cape - Elections

The next District Meeting is to be a phone conference at a time to be announced by District Director Amy Kates.

Equal Pay Day - April 20, 2010

When the Equal pay act was passed in 1963, on average, full-time working Women were paid 59 cents for every dollar paid to men. Over the past 47 years the situation has improved for women. In 2008 the ratio of women’s and men’s median annual earning for full-time year round workers was 77.1, down from 77.8 in 2007. This means that annual gender wage gap for full-time year-round workers is 22.9 percent. Progress in closing the gender earnings gap has slowed considerably since the early 1990’s. One year after college graduation women earn only 80 percent of what men earn. This continues to be an ongoing issue as we Strife to reach EQUALITY for ALL WOMEN.

BPW/MA Winter Board

March 13, 2010
Your President attended the State Winter Board which was held at the University of MA Medical School in Worcester, MA. The meeting was called to order by State President V.J. Harnett, there were twenty four registered members in attendance.

President Harnett has suggested many changes for the 2010-2011 year in order to have our State meetings be less formal and more welcoming to all. President Harnett would like to offer programs that stress value and education as the focus of our meetings and thus increase attendance at State gatherings.

Treasurer Caroline Coscia stated that the total of $2,385.00 had been collected towards the Foundation licensing fee, due to the fact that the State fee which covers all of the locals has been reduced to $50.00, the 47 members plus one local who had paid the amount of $40.00 each towards the original fee will be receiving a check as their refunded payment.

The 2010-2011 proposed budget was brought for discussion to be voted on at the State Convention in May.

Our program for the day was presented by Caroline Coscia, the topic was the upcoming United States Census. Caroline presented a very interesting and informative program as she encouraged all to fill in this form and remit it as she outlined the many benefits which towns and cities receive according to the census returns.

State Nomination Chair Patricia Stowell announced that there will not be interviews held for the upcoming State Officer positions, however a candidates forum will continue to be held.

The entire day was very informative, productive and upbeat, I encourage as many members as are able to make an earnest attempt to attend the BPW/MA State Convention on May 15, 2010.

New Procedure for Dinner Meeting Check-in
When checking in at our regular dinner meetings, please pick up a menu at the registration table and mark your dinner choices on it. Then put the marked menu at the place where you will be sitting.
